The Sovereignty Premium is a Fairy Tale
The hypocrisy in Brussels is reaching a fever pitch. While the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA) hallucinates a world where 40% of our clean tech is 'Homegrown' by 2030, the reality on the ground for a Dutch or German installer is stark: you are either buying Chinese LFP cells, or you are paying a 30% 'sovereignty premium' for a European sticker on a product that still relies on Ningde for its guts. Ilka von Dalwigk is stating the obvious, but for the solar pro, this isn't about geopolitics—it's about bankability and the LFP price floor.
We’ve seen this movie before with modules. Currently, Tier 1 Chinese manufacturers are pushing cell prices toward $50/kWh. Meanwhile, European champions like Northvolt are pivoting toward high-nickel chemistries for the premium EV market because they simply cannot compete on the cost-per-cycle required for stationary storage. If you're a project developer in Iberia or Italy looking at a 10MWh BESS build, your lender doesn't care about EU strategic autonomy; they care about the 20-year warranty and the O&M support. Right now, only the Asian giants have the balance sheets to back those promises.

If you want to actually hedge against this dependency, stop looking at where the factory is located and start looking at the chemistry. Sodium-ion (Na-ion) is the only real escape hatch. It bypasses the lithium-cobalt-nickel bottleneck where China holds a decade-long head start in refining. Companies like Tiamat in France are trying, but the scale is microscopic compared to HiNa or CATL’s sodium roadmaps. Until we see a massive CAPEX shift into non-lithium supply chains, your procurement strategy should remain pragmatic: diversify your Chinese Tier 1 suppliers so you aren't beholden to a single OEM's shipping schedule.
